What You'll Learn

What's Covered in This Short Course

Ever stood in front of a stunning landscape, taken the shot, and been disappointed by the result? There's a reason for that — and it has nothing to do with your camera being rubbish. In this course, Stephen Walton explains exactly why it happens and how bracketing and HDR give you a way to fix it.

1

What is dynamic range — and why does your camera struggle with it? Stephen explains why what you see with your eyes and what your camera captures are two very different things, and why this matters for landscape photographers specifically

2

What bracketing actually is — the term gets used a lot, but do you understand exactly what it involves and why it works? Find out what's happening when you bracket and why multiple exposures solve the problem a single shot can't

3

When to use HDR — and when not to — HDR isn't the right tool for every situation, and using it in the wrong place produces results that look overworked and unnatural. Stephen explains precisely where it excels and where to leave it alone

4

Does your camera support bracketing? — some cameras have it built in, others require a different approach. Stephen walks you through how to find out and what to look for in your menu system, regardless of which camera you shoot with

5

Setting up bracketing — AEB vs manual — there are two ways to bracket, and one of them involves a trade-off most photographers don't know about. Discover which approach suits your shooting style and when each one is the better option

6

Which exposure setting to use for bracketing — aperture, shutter speed or ISO? Each one changes the brightness of your shot, but two of them bring hidden problems when you try to blend the images together. Find out which one Stephen recommends and why

7

Blending bracketed images in Lightroom — once you've taken your shots, what's the process for merging them into a single, natural-looking result? Stephen walks you through the workflow from start to finish

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to shoot HDR to get great landscape photos? +
Not always — Stephen covers this specifically. There are landscape situations where a single exposure works just fine, and others where bracketing makes a significant difference. The course helps you recognise which is which so you can make the right call on location.
Does my camera need to have AEB built in? +
No. Stephen covers both automatic and manual bracketing approaches, so even if your camera doesn't have a built-in AEB function, you can still achieve great results by following the manual process he explains.
Will I need a tripod for bracketing? +
A tripod is strongly recommended, particularly for manual bracketing, to ensure all your exposures align correctly when you blend them. Stephen covers why this matters and what can go wrong if your camera moves between shots.
Does this course cover the Lightroom blending process in detail? +
Yes. The course includes a walkthrough video showing the process of blending bracketed images together in Lightroom, from importing your exposures through to a finished, natural-looking result.
How do I access the course after purchase? +
