What's the Route?

This Harry Potter photo walk will take you through some of the iconic sites of Edinburgh which were inspiration for JK Rowling’s stories as well as other dark and moody spots. Starting off at the Ross Fountain we’ll head to the old side of the city passing by;

  • The New Steps
  • St Giles’ Cathedral
  • The Royal Mile
  • Victoria Street (part-inspiration for Diagon Alley)
  • Candlemaker Row
  • Greyfriars Kirkyard (the grave site of Thomas ‘Tom Riddle’ Riddell)
  • Cowgate
  • Cockburn Street
  • The Balmoral Hotel

Full details of the route will be included in a confirmation email when you reserve your spot.

What Do I Need to Bring Along?

It doesn’t matter what camera equipment you have. During the photo walk, your tutor Stephen Walton, can show you what settings to use and when to make the most of a moment. It’s a good idea to pack light with room for snacks and water.

Bring along a couple of memory cards and a spare battery too. It’s up to you if you want to take your tripod and lens filters, simply consider the location and the weather on the day.

Choose some comfy walking shoes, though we’re sure to have a break at a cafe eventually!

How Long Does a Photo Walk Last?

Our Edinburgh photo walk lasts approximately 6 hours following a pre-designated route (subject to slight changes) specifically designed to pass amazing photo opportunities.

Along the walk, you can chat to fellow photographers and find out a little more about what they enjoy shooting. It’s a great way of making photo friends if you normally shoot alone.

Most of the photography will focus on the historic and darker side of Edinburgh’s relationship with Harry Potter amongst other things.
